Lawyers work on behalf of people and entities in legal matters. The job is complex and rewarding, with different career paths available based on a person’s area of expertise and interest. An attorney may be an advocate, a litigator or a counselor. An attorney must be an excellent communicator, as they must be able to convey complicated topics in understandable terms to clients and to judges and jury members during trials or other legal proceedings.
A lawyer’s responsibilities are to analyze the facts of a case, interpret laws and regulations, determine how they apply to the case at hand and provide counsel accordingly. After earning a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from law school, attorneys must pass the bar exam to become licensed to practice law in their state. Some attorneys choose to pursue a Master of Laws (LLM) degree, which can add depth to their knowledge base and broaden their career options.
Once an attorney becomes licensed, they can work as a litigator or counselor. Litigators are involved in trial practice, while counselors focus on providing legal advice to their clients. Attorneys may be hired by individuals or companies to handle complex legal issues, or they may work in government positions.
Those who are interested in becoming lawyers should be enterprising individuals who are ambitious, confident and extroverted. They should be motivated and able to communicate effectively, both verbally and written. They must have the ability to comprehend large amounts of detailed information quickly and be able to hone in on the most pertinent details for their case.
Attorneys must be willing to travel, as they may have to attend court cases in other states or countries. They must also be able to maintain confidentiality with their clients, as they are often privy to sensitive and confidential information. They must be able to juggle multiple loyalties, including those to their clients, the administration of justice and their colleagues in the legal community.
An attorney’s responsibilities include the filing of legal documents, attending hearings and meetings, preparing research for legal battles, conducting depositions and filing class action lawsuits. They must be able to negotiate with opposing parties and settle cases when possible.
An attorney must be able to think critically and analyze the law, and they must be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
