What Are Gas Masks

A gas mask is a piece of personal protective equipment that protects the wearer from inhaling airborne pollutants and toxic gases. It forms a sealed cover over the nose and mouth, and may also cover the eyes and other vulnerable soft tissues of the face.

The most common gas masks are designed to filter air contaminated by chemical warfare agents, toxic industrial chemicals and biological agents (including bacteria and viruses). Some have additional filters to also remove particles from the air.

Carbon filters are most effective against organic chemicals because they adsorb organic molecules rather than simply filter them out. Activated carbon has a very large surface area with many pores that give it this ability. For example, a typical filter can have “an adsorptive surface area in excess of 3000 m2” (APS Physics).

It is important to note that respirators are not a substitute for medical care and must be used with caution. People who use them may experience discomfort from the seal, and those with lung diseases like asthma or emphysema should not wear them long term. Some people with claustrophobia or vision problems may not be able to comfortably wear masks and should choose other types of personal protection.
